Our programs have been recognized by the National Science Foundation and funding from the Dryfus, Keck, and Welch Foundations. We offer extensive research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. We offer four undergraduate majors—Biology, Botany, Marine Biology, and Zoology. Biology majors may elect to specialize in one of five emphases—General Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, and Science Education. We also offer an M.S. in Biology. Our programs emphasize hands‑on learning and personal interaction with faculty. Many of our courses take advantage of the surrounding natural environment. We have excellent facilities, including a marine laboratory in Trinidad; an ocean‑going research vessel, the North Wind; biotechnology laboratories; greenhouses; the Vertebrate Museum; a Herbarium; scanning and transmission electron microscopes; the Humboldt Natural History Museum; and the College Core Facility. Courses offered include Human Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Marine Biology, General Microbiology, Biogeography, Plant/Animal Interactions, General Botany, Plant Ecology, Biology of Microfungi, Pollination Biology, Forest Pathology, Introductory Zoology, Animal Physiology, Herpetology, Mammalogy, General Entomology, and Advanced Topics.
